Here in the UK Mad Max was released 45 years ago today. I've released a print of this illustration that was inspired by Big Boppa's crash in the movie. Buy it here now.
I think it was at a friends 11th Birthday party where I first saw a Mad Max movie. I remember epic car chases, a pretty lady in white and a kid using a metal boomerang to cut off some angry dude's fingers. I think we watched Deep Star Six on the same afternoon. It was awesome.
It was only years later I discovered Road Warrior was in fact a sequel to Mad Max and caught it as a late night movie on Channel 4. While I was never as smitten with the original as I became with The Road Warrior but there is no denying the audacity involved in taking such a small budget and pumping it so full of Nitro.
I love the way Max's story has become the stuff of legend in that world, never really being pinned down to a specific version of events, but taking elements of each film and embellishing them over and over as it becomes a vast sprawling mythology.
